When your kids school day screws up your kid free time

The spawn’s school changed their bell times this year and I have not yet adjusted to it. We are doing well getting up on time and making it to school, however it’s everything I do afterwards that’s all screwed up!

I used to be able to drop the kids off at school. Go home, let the dog out, get the dog fresh water and a bowl of food. Then I lock up and head out to run errands for the morning. I could make it to Starbucks and then head over to whatever store and get my stuff done. Then I’d be home, unloaded, everything put away and I could do whatever needed to be done around the house. Also known as having a nap.

I worked last night. I fell asleep some time just after 1:30am. I was woken up by the red head searching through the hall closet. When asked what she was doing up so early so explained that she had sooooooooo many bug bites. I thought she was holding a band aid which made no sense to me at all. I was half asleep after all. She informed me, nearly in tears, that she was looking for the bug cream. She got herself all fixed up and went back up to bed. I am pretty sure I fell asleep before she hit the first step to go upstairs. You may think I am a bad Mom for not getting up and helping her, however I believe I am teaching her how to do things for herself. She’s nearly 9, and can apply her own bug cream!

Alarm went off at 6:45am. I wanted to smash it with my baseball bat. Fast forward to taking the kids to school. I drove this morning, this means we have to leave earlier than normal due to the first week of Kindergarten chaos. Honestly, I am glad we drove. I had to dodge a puking kid coming off the bus the other morning. I was also nearly exposed to vomit last night at work. I had had enough of close calls. I left the kids at school and went home to do the usual routine. Headed out to the stores I needed to go to. Pull into deserted parking lot and realized that since it’s only 8:25 am. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS OPEN!!! I was torn with going home and just going back to bed  or doing what I ended up doing which is grabbing a Bacon and egg mc muffin from McDonalds and waiting for all the stores to open.

Going home was just not an option. I had things to do that needed to be done today and I was already out there so it’s not like I would drive the 20 minutes home, hang out for 20 minutes and then make the 20 min drive back.

Sigh, my point of all this is that I hate the new bell times. I’m sure it’s great for some people, but so far I am not experiencing this greatness. I don’t see the brilliance behind this plan. I just see the traffic screw up, the bags under my eyes and the line up at Costco which apparently begins at 9:20am (they don’t open until 10am). I tried to have a nap after coming home today but all I did was lay there and roll around. I am at the point where I am so tired and want to nap but can’t. Honestly it’s better this way. Hopefully I will just be good and tired and be able to sleep tonight no problem. I even have the bed to myself for a few nights!! Hooray!

Survived the first week of school!

I am loving back to school. The kids are back into their routine and while the first week was busy, I am glad they are enjoying being back at school. The school bell now rings at 8:15am, this means the kids need to be on the playground at 8am(ish). We made the mistake of driving the first day. Well to be honest the kids back packs weight more than Aidan so we decided there would be slightly less grumbling if we drove.

Big mistake.

While there was no grumbling from the children, there were swear words from myself. The Elementary school and High school now start at the same time. This equals a shit show of traffic. It’s a good thing that Kindergarten doesn’t start the same week as the rest of the school otherwise shit show wouldn’t even begin to cover what a mess that would have been.

The kids all seem quite happy with their classmates, class rooms and teachers. Madeline was a little sad to find out that one of her friends moved away during the summer. She was really looking forward to seeing this friend so it was a little hard on her. They re-organization could bring some changes, but hopefully the kids stay where they are.

We have been managing well getting up an hour before they need to be at school. This will have to change come winter. There is so much crap to get on and then of course I am planning on getting them to walk as much as possible so this of course means, leaving earlier than normal as well.

I tried to salvage some of the front garden. I had plans for it this spring and then I had to be all grown up and get a job. So the plans kind of fell through and the garden basically turned to weeds. Oh so many weeds. The hedges around this tree also became quite over grown. So yesterday I decided that since the weather was nice, it would be a great idea to tackle the weeds. Oh my god. Today. Everything. Hurts. I have to work tonight and as I sit here typing this, my arms ache with every keystroke. How the frig am I supposed to do my job tonight. Basically, this blog entry is warming up my stiff muscles so that work doesn’t suck tonight.

The worst part is that I’m not even done the damn garden!! There is so much more to rip out and then I want to put down that weed fabric so that next spring I don’t have as much crap to pull out when it gets neglected for weeks on end. This garden sucks. It wasn’t dug down deep enough and then filled with good soil. It’s pretty much clay with a bit of dirt and mulch thrown on top. Frustrating. I’d like to start over, however this girl is not made of money!

In other kid related news, the girls are starting Brownies this week. We haven’t put Aidan into anything yet. All three will continue with their swimming lessons starting next weekend. The girls are in Swimmer 5 and Aidan is in Swimmer 3. Aidan has improved so much this summer! We are so proud of him. He went from not wanting to let go of the side or a parent to being able to swim to the bottom of the deep end to retrieve a ring! The girls are doing well of course as well. They graduated from Swimmer 3 and were able to pass 4 and go directly to Swimmer 5. I hope to keep the kids interested in swimming as long as possible. It’s something I always enjoyed and certainly can cost less than other sports!!

Time to go clean the house so that the babysitter doesn’t think we are total slobs. She is picking the kids up from school today and hanging out with them until the husband gets home from work. I’m working afternoons and won’t see the kids again until my alarm goes off at 6:45 to get them up for school. Ugh. Some serious high 5’s to all the working parents out there. And high 5’s to awesome babysitters. I’m so glad we found two great ones. The kids are always so happy when they get to spend time with them!

Back to school may just break my bank account

My father used to joke that he was going to cut my big toes off every year when I needed a new pair of shoes. Now that I have 3 pairs of feet as well as my own to put shoes on, I am starting to understand a bit better why he joked about this.

This year Isabelle needed outdoor and indoor shoes. Goodbye $130. Aidan needed outdoor shoes. Goodbye $65. Madeline needed outdoor shoes. Goodbye another $65. I still have yet to purchase back to school items on that wonderful list the school sends home with the final report card. Throw in Isabelle will be needing some new clothes for this fall/winter.

I feel like I should have kept my second paying job. Back to school is costing way too much money. I realize that the teachers aren’t getting enough money to cover the costs of supplies. I don’t mind buying a few things here and there throughout the year. Honestly, I’d rather they asked us to do that. Dropping nearly $150 on supplies at the end of the summer can be a little rough.

We have kept our summer rather low key, but I still have a few plans up my sleeve to entertain the kids. Yet, I find myself weighing the costs of these activities against what I will need for back to school.

Isabelle’s list is a little better this year. She will need 4 colour specific duo-tangs. Thankfully I still have a stash from last year. 1pkg of Crayola crayons. 1pkg of Crayola washable markers. 2 highlighters. 1 thick black Sharpie and 1 thin black Sharpie. (Isabelle seems really pumped about this, who knew Sharpies were so important to a third grader!!) 6 jumbo glue sticks. 1 calculator. 4 white erasers. 3 boxes of Kleenex. And finally 1 package of unscented, alcohol free baby wipes.

Isabelle is going to be pissed that she is not to have a pencil case or box this year. She was over the moon last year when she had to buy one. Then she had her spirit crushed when her English teacher sent it home. Not sure why the French kids need one and the English ones don’t. Likely I will be buying her one regardless and she can keep her stuff at home in it.

Here’s what the twins need, keep in mind this will all be x2.

Duo-tangs, not plastic. White, red, black, green yellow, orange, blue. (Again, I still have  stash from last year.) 1 pkg Crayola crayons. 1 pkg of pencil crayons. 1 pkg of Crayola washable markers. 1 highlighter. 2 large glue sticks. 1 washable white school glue. 1 pencil box. 1 white eraser. 3 boxes of Kleenex and 2 packages of unscented, alcohol free baby wipes.

My plan is to start shopping for all of this soon. I have waited and then had a really hard time finding what I needed. However, if you go too soon then you are still paying the regular price for most of it. Isabelle has been on me lately to get out and get the shopping done. She is in love with back to school shopping. I asked her what was so special about it and she just loves the idea of getting all new stuff. I reminded her that she doesn’t get to use any of this until she takes it to school but she doesn’t seem to care.

Since buying them all new shoes, they have been wearing them almost non stop. I got up yesterday morning to all the kids still in pajama’s and wearing their shoes. It’s kind of adorable.

We made the trip to the Michigan Science Centre last week and the kids had a blast. I was a little worried that they were going to be bored since nothing has changed since the last time we went. Wrong. It was a great day! I didn’t take any pictures because I had my phone off and totally forgot that we have a regular camera! I hope to get them to the Hands on Museum in Ann Arbor before school starts. If not, I believe it’s fairly educational and worth missing school for!!

Work is going well. I work in a few hours and the kids aren’t pleased that I am 1. missing dinner and 2. not going to be tucking them in tonight and 3. will not be home to read Harry Potter.

Speaking of Potter. I am a total sucker for the Harry Potter Funko Pop figures. The guy at the store was trying to sell me the collector’s sleeve which will keep out all dust etc. Um, yeah we are collecting them, but not in the way most people are. The kids had those suckers out of the boxes before we even got in the van! So far we have Hagrid, Harry, Hermione in her dress, Ron, Dumbledore and Sirius Black. We are well in to book 5 and while I’m really enjoying it, the kids seem a little bored of this one. I have been trying to decide if perhaps we should put it away for a while and read some other books or just keep going. It’s hard to put them down because I am really enjoying how much they are able to recall from the other books. We even end up having little discussions about what we think is going to happen or what has happened in the past that could spark something in the future. I love seeing their little minds at work.

With back to school on the brain, I leave you with this as it always makes me chuckle!

Is it back to school yet?

I can’t be the only parent who feels that back to school should start September 1st. My children are raging at each other most of the day. Maddy has reverted to her three year old self and started biting and pinching today!!

It’s not that I am not trying to keep them happy. I am fucking tired of being cruise directory already! Our summer started off poorly with having to drive to and from Isabelle’s French camp for three weeks. Once that was over it felt like summer. Aidan went to my parents for a week and had a great time. The girls enjoyed ruling the roost (they do that regardless of Aidan’s presence) and having Mom to themselves.

Isabelle managed to catch a bit of a cold but it finally left after a few weeks of some awesome coughing. The kids all went to my awesome friends house for two nights and had a wonderful time! What a nice break, the husband and I went out to see a movie and enjoyed getting some things done around the house without kids underfoot. We went to Colasanti’s with the other grandparents and had a great day! They have been invited to friends houses for swimming and numerous playdates. We went to the movies, we’ve been out for dinners and other tasty treats! We have played at numerous parks etc.

The girls then had their trip to my parents for a week and poor Aidan came down with a fever and a cough. Day 4 of his fever and cough we managed to get in with our Pediatrician and she confirmed a thought I had dare not say out loud, Aidan has pneumonia. I had a feeling that this was what he had however had been hoping that I would be wrong. I don’t know how he managed to contract pneumonia in mid August but he did. He’s still coughing like crazy at times but it seems it is finally clearing out of is lung!

The girls returned home after a busy week at the grandparents. It was hard for them to have a few down days because Aidan was still too sick to do much. Despite their crankiness to not getting up and going anywhere I think they actually enjoyed the break. We baked muffins, we slept in, we stayed up late to have some movie nights with popcorn or ice cream. I still have to get them up one night to see the stars. It’s been so overcast at night lately I hope we can get this in before school starts.

One more week to go. The kids need to go back to school. They have had a great summer but are ready to get back to their schedule. I am so ready to get back to mine! I have three courses starting the day they go back to school. I am nervous about having three at one time. My semester ends right in the middle of when we were crazy sick last winter. I am crossing just about every body part that we won’t be that sick this year. I am willing to accept a little bit of sickness but I might pack up and move south if we go through what we went through last winter.

Isabelle will be seeing the Orthodontist this week. I believe she will be getting some teeth extracted just like her sister. Madeline has her tonsillectomy this month as well. Back to school is a welcomed time of year, but it is also crazy busy! I have a calendar in the kitchen and another in my office as well as on my phone. I am hoping to be organized and prepared for everything that is to come this year!

9 more sleeps to go!!
